Weekly Board Meeting

Wednesdays at 6:00 pm in Coltrane Lounge. Bring your dinner. As part of an ongoing effort to amend our constitution this week we'll be discussing the definitions and missions of board positions. 
Come on by the Gear Room in FIC Tuesday and Thursday 4:30 - 7:00 to borrow gear for free.

Chicks on Dix
with Abby and Sophie
Knock a winter ascent of a 46er off your J Term bucket list! We'll set off Friday morning and ski into our campsite at Boquet River. The next day we'll hike to the summit of Mt Dix and return to the van. Prepare to be back on campus Saturday evening. Abby will prepare you a gourmet meal, Sophie will tell you a bedtime story. Sunrise Overnight up Mt Abe

Looking to spice up your week? Join us for an overnight up Mt. Abraham! We will leave Thursday at 6:30pm (after dinner) and sleep over on Battell Shelter on the Long Trail, where we will wake up early to watch the sunrise over our beautiful state. Hot chocolate, snackaroos, other wonderful things will be provided. We will be back on campus for 10:00 classes after some rad sledding down Lincoln Gap. This will be a great introduction trip to winter camping, and a great way to experience Vermont's best sledding! We will be meeting in the Gear Room on Tuesday at 5pm to check out microspikes, headlamps, snowshoes and anything else you need. Sign up here.

Wilderness First Responder Feb Break Class Has Spots Still Available
Wilderness First Responder (WFR) is the industry standard for outdoor leaders. This 80-hour certification course covers everything in the WFA curriculum, then exceeds and expands upon these fundamentals in both depth and scope. Patient assessment, traumatic injuries, medical emergencies, environmental injuries, bites and stings, long term care protocols, evacuation procedures, and much more are all addressed. The format integrates classroom sessions with significant practical and scenario-based learning time. The result is an educational experience sure to be of great value to everyone from active outdoor recreationalists to seasoned outdoor professionals.  Course Fee $400.00 for Middlebury students payable through the Box Office at go/boxoffice. FOO Hiring EMTs and WEMTs for Evac Crew
  • Conduct evacuations involving minor injuries or illnesses making it difficult for FOO participants to continue, or negatively impacting the experiences of the other group members. Examples might be strains or sprains, colds and bugs, minor soft-tissue injuries, etc. This may require skiing or snowshoeing with a heavy pack. It is possible that an overnight in the field may be necessary.
  • Staff the FOO emergency hotline in the Crest Room. This hotline is staffed around the clock while trips are in the field, including over night.
  • Document in writing all actions taken in the event of an evacuation.
Required Qualifications
  • Valid WEMT or EMT
  • Significant winter back-country experience
  • Ability to hike 5-10 miles with heavy pack in all conditions
  • Registered member of Middlebury Rescue
  • College Driver's License

Middview Leader Information Session This Week
Interested in applying to be a MiddView Trip Leader? Not really sure what it entails? Come listen to MiddView Trips Staff and past leaders describe the experience, the schedule, and the benefits of leading for MiddView. This is a great opportunity to ask logistical questions and learn about the different trip opportunities; Transfer and Exchange, Community Engagement, Vermont Explorations, and Wilderness Explorations.​  If you cannot make either of these meetings, information is available at go/lead.  Application period is February 6th-24th, 2016.

Ian Burgin Memorial Lodge
The Ian Burgin Memorial Lodge is a cabin being built at Broadleaf to memorialize '08 Middlebury Graduate, Ian Burgin. The goal of the project is to provide a space that encourages Middlebury College students and community members alike to enjoy the beauty of Vermont in all of its seasons. Learn more or donate here.

Volunteer Opportunity
Do you like farms? Do you like hot chocolate? Do you like getting outside on a gorgeous winter day? Join VSO this Saturday, January 30th at Wild Roots Farm. Wild Roots Farm is an educational forest farm that grows food in unsuitable environments (like the forest). We will be cutting down and moving trees and branches to set up an area to grow mushrooms. We will be meeting at ADK at 8:45 AM and will be back on campus by 12:30 PM. RSVP at go/wildrootsfarm
