SABANI: THE RACING CANOES OF OKINAWA
Wednesday, November 3rd
BiHall 220, 4:30-6:00PM

The Sabani is the iconic fishing boat of the Okinawan archipelago. By 2009 there were only three men left in all of Okinawa that could still build these boats.  Vermont boat builder Douglas Brooks apprenticed with 81-year old Ryujin Shimojo in order to document the techniques and secrets of this craft.  In this slide presentation Brooks will tell the story of building this unique boat and put it in the context of the enormous cultural and social changes that have taken place in Okinawa and Japan since World War Two.
